New helm in Asia Charan Singh is Managing Director of Zeaborn Ship Management (Singapore) – and the first point of contact for customers in the region

Extensive support for existing customers while new owners have easy access to a con tact point. These are the hallmarks of Zeaborn Ship Management (Singapore) operations since 2007. The success story of former Rickmers Shipmanagement Singapore is characterised by tremendous energy – and a new head. “We know that our business partners need to maintain close ties with their service providers. This includes contacts in the same time zone,” says Charan Singh, who has been managing the company in the capacity of Managing Director since June this year.

Tall, dark hair, friendly appearance and a firm handshake – the epitome of commitment, politeness, reliability and determination. However, his debonair looks belie his 30 years of experience in the maritime business. “My career began as a seaman on a variety of ships”, says Singh. Tankers, container vessels, bulkers and car carriers, all manner of ships. He quickly assumes responsibility as deck officer and is in charge of multinational teams of crew members.

In this phase, he renders his services for a Hong Kong ship manager. When he seeks to improve his lot, the holder of a British passport moves to Great Britain, completes his Master’s Degree in International Trade & Transport (Shipping Business) and remains in London as the Manager of a bulker shipping company. In 2013 his career ultimately takes him back to Asia, this time to Singapore. As Senior Vice President Commercial of a shipping company, he holds responsibility for the Chartering, Operations and Insurance Divisions. During a period of years he establishes a broad network of contacts with ship owners, managers, charterers and insurers. “Zeaborn Ship Management enjoys a good reputation in Asia. As a ship manager it is a potential business partner for many ship owners and institutional investors who either have no or insufficient capacities in this field,” says Singh.

However, acquiring and marketing the Zeaborn Ship Management Services on site requires a local presence – not in each individual country but in the region. “Singapore is an ideal location as the leading Asian city in container shipping and bulking operations. Not least because many contacts are represented there. Many others can be reached from here via short flights.”

Zeaborn Ship Management (Singapore) started in 2007 as Rickmers Ship - management with ten employees. Now there are 53, and all have a pro fessional background in shipping. The company has been part of the Bremen-based Zeaborn Group since September 2017. Work ing closely with ship broker Harper Petersen, also a Zeaborn affiliate, guarantees additional shipping expertise, which the customers benefit from. The ship broker is based in Hamburg and maintains offices in Singapore and Shanghai.

Singapore prides itself in being the second largest container port in the world. The office is located next to Keppel Harbour, one of the city’s container terminals.

Three further ships of an existing customer have just been added to the ship management operations. Singh: “We are happy about this new assignment, the trust placed in our service and are delighted to see further organic growth.”
